Chapter 24

After church Rosario suggested we have brunch at a nearby sidewalk café. I was glad it was just we two and we agreed not to discuss the investigation. Clearly, we needed a break from the Blackthorne House project, its mystery and digging up the past. The late morning was sunny and warm. We enjoyed a brunch of shrimp, mozzarella and tomato salad, and then we topped off the meal with a sliver of decadent chocolate cheesecake.

"Mmm… this cheesecake is just what I need, and don't need!" I teased.

"Ah, a few extra calories won't hurt you, you're young enough to work it off through daily activity. I am the one who needs to watch her diet… age does that, you know."

"Actually, I don't know, but I'll take your word for it and indulge while I can," I smiled.

"So, Shannon, what's on your agenda for the rest of this lovely day?"

I set down my fork and answered. "Well, I am anxious to finish comparing the blue prints of Blackthorne House to its structure. And, with this being a day off for Zach, he offered to help."

"But, dear, you said you needed time off from Blackthorne House."

"I know, I know. But, Rosario, if Zach helps me today, I can get this part of my assignment out of the way and it won't nag at me," I protested.

She looked at me thoughtfully, reached over and patted my hand, "No time like the present, is there? And Zach, I'm sure will be of assistance, he's so knowledgeable about old architecture."

"Then, you don't mind if I pay the bill and head back home?"

"I do too, mind!"

She reached over and grabbed the bill before I could pick it up. "I invited you to brunch. I will pay the bill and not another word from you, young lady!"

"Oh, Rosario, some people never change, thank God, you are one of those people," I got up, hugged her and went on my way.

Once I got home I called Zach. He'd said he'd be right over. No kidding! I had no sooner changed my clothes than the doorbell chimed.

"Hi Zach, come on in."

"Did you have a pleasant morning?"

"Yeah, sure did, follow me out the back and I'll tell you about my brunch with Rosario."

Five minutes later we stood in front of the garage. I said to Zach, "You probably know more about garages than I do. How about if we take a look at the blueprints and plans at the table over there?" I pointed to a patio table in the side garden, about ten feet to the right of the garage.

"Sure."

I laid out the paperwork and gave Zach a few minutes to study everything. After a while, he looked up, "This shouldn't take too long, it's logical and uncomplicated."

We spent the next hour comparing the interior of the garage to the paperwork.

"That does it, Shannon. Nothing appears to be off kilter. All the plans were executed to perfection. Exactly what I expected from this high quality of construction."

"Foiled, again. I thought for sure we'd find something suspicious.
